Overview
GOHA BriefTyphoon Lagoon is one of two water parks at Walt Disney World Resort, themed as a tropical bay left wrecked by a typhoon. It suits families with a mix of ages, from toddlers who need a gentle play area to older kids and adults after fast slides and big waves.
The park sits in Lake Buena Vista, between Disney's Old Key West Resort, Disney's Caribbean Beach Resort and Disney Springs. It opened on June 1, 1989, and the storm theme runs throughout, with ships, fishing gear and surfboards scattered across the grounds. Up on Mount Mayday sits Miss Tilly, a shrimp boat whose bell signals a set of large waves rolling in.
The Surf Pool is the main draw. Disney bills it as North America's largest wave pool, with waves up to 6 feet tall roughly every 90 seconds, and you can book surfing lessons or private surf sessions there. For a slower pace, Castaway Creek is a lazy river of about 2,100 feet that winds through a grotto and rain forest around the park.
Thrill-seekers can try Humunga Kowabunga, three enclosed speed slides with a drop of about five stories, or Crush 'n' Gusher, a water coaster. There are also the Storm Slides body slides, the Miss Adventure Falls family raft ride and three tube and raft slides ranging from mild Keelhaul Falls to wild Mayday Falls. Young children have Ketchakiddee Creek and the beginner Bay Slides.
