GOHA BriefDisney's Blizzard Beach is a water park in the Walt Disney World Resort area of Bay Lake, themed as a ski resort that melted after a freak Florida snowstorm. With 12 attractions across more than 60 acres, it suits thrill-seekers chasing big drops as well as families who want rafts, a lazy river, a wave pool and a kids' play area.
Blizzard Beach opened on April 1, 1995, as the third water park at Walt Disney World, after River Country and Typhoon Lagoon. The whole park plays on its melted ski resort story, and everything centres on Mount Gushmore. You can ride the Chairlift up to the top slides, which is an attraction in its own right, or take the stairs. Most of the water is heated to about 80 degrees Fahrenheit. The exception is the melting-snow ice cave in Cross Country Creek.
The headline ride is Summit Plummet, a body slide with a drop of about 120 feet and speeds up to around 60 mph. Slush Gusher drops about 90 feet, with two small hills that give you some air time. On the Purple Slope you can race friends on Downhill Double Dipper, Snow Stormers and Toboggan Racers. Runoff Rapids has three inner-tube slides that all end in one splashdown pool.
For a slower pace, Melt-Away Bay is the big wave pool and Cross Country Creek is a relaxed lazy river on tubes. Teamboat Springs is a whitewater raft ride for groups that is described as one of the longest group raft rides in the world, and one guide describes it as a good fit for families. Younger kids have Tike's Peak, a play area with small slides and a Frozen-themed section.
